Program Description

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is pleased to offer a post-doctoral fellowship in pharmacy education innovation and research.  This fellowship provides exposure and mentored experience across the full range of educational research activities, including study design, data collection, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant writing. Although the program will be tailored to each Fellow’s unique skills and experiences, s/he will gain broad experience in educational research and assessment supporting the core mission of CIPhER. Health professions schools are uniquely positioned to examine critical educational research questions that are not only of importance to themselves, but of increasing interest and significance to larger audiences across higher education. CIPhER is committed to producing rigorous and systematic educational research that will provide insight necessary to advance strategic initiatives, improve student outcomes, enhance workforce development, and position the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy as a model of educational innovation and excellence, nationally and globally.  The appointment is 12-months in duration with the option to extend the fellowship for a second 12-month appointment and is anticipated to start on October 15, 2021.

Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research

The Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research (CIPhER). Founded in 2017, CIPhER’s mission focuses broadly on improving the practice of pharmacy education and the quality and impact of research and scholarship on pharmacy education by coordinating and fostering the efforts of the School’s faculty, clinical preceptors, postgraduate fellows, residents and teaching assistants. CIPhER aims to help faculty and others to more effectively: teach, assess and promote student learning; and produce peer-reviewed publications and compete for grants.  CIPhER sponsors certificate offerings, contributes to continuing professional education, offers onsite and online training workshops and seminars, and coordinates relevant, mutually beneficial efforts with entities such as other UNC health science schools, the UNC School of Education, ACCP, AACP, and the PharmAlliance.

Program Structure

  • Pharmacy Education Research (70%): The postdoctoral fellow will join existing research project teams in addition to developing and implementing independent research at the School. The postdoctoral research associate will provide research expertise to faculty and students developing scholarship of education
  • CIPhER Service (20%): This position will provide administrative, service and other support, as needed, to CIPhER and its educational initiatives, including but not limited to CIPhER Seminars, Teaching & Learning Certificate Program and the CIPhER Summer Institute.
  • Pharmacy Education Practice (10%): While this Fellowship is primarily focused on developing proficiency in research, limited teaching, facilitation, assessment and course design opportunities are
  • Scientific Meetings: Each Fellow is expected to attend and present their research/scholarship at a minimum of one relevant national or international academic conference/meeting per


Requirements

To be considered for this fellowship, the applicant must provide evidence of a terminal degree from an accredited university; PharmD, or PhD in educational research, higher education or other related field. 

  • Professional Knowledge: Knowledge of research methods, including research design, data collection, analysis techniques (quantitative and/or qualitative), and interpretation of results. Ability to manage and analyze data from multiple projects and contexts. Ability to identify new research questions and inquiry opportunities, disseminate new findings to multiple stakeholders, and make recommendations for implementing improvements or changes.
  • Collaboration: Ability to apply knowledge and understanding of Center purpose, culture, issues, and work relationships within and between the School, University, and outside collaborators to promote the Center’s agenda. Ability to share perceptions, knowledge and critical thinking as needed. Ability to promote the use of best practices to achieve shared CIPhER goals.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate scholarly ideas and findings effectively in various venues, including conferences, committees, publications, and group meetings. Ability to build, maintain and enhance professional relationships to increase credibility and effectiveness of the Center. Ability to help promote and market the Center with increasing visibility as the Center continues to grow and expand. Ability to apply creativity to development of strategies and functions.
